Driven by the global trend toward decarbonization, the use of ammonia fuel, including the development of ammonia co-firing thermal power generation and ammonia-fueled marine engines, is rapidly increasing. However, ammonia is toxic, irritating (offensive odor) and corrosive, so ensuring safety while handling ammonia fuel is important. To date, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Mitsubishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. have developed comprehensive systems for marine ammonia fuel handling, including ammonia fuel supply and ammonia abatement. The ammonia abatement system removes toxic residual ammonia generated in the piping purge process when switching ammonia fuel to oil in dual-fuel engines. This system enables quick ammonia abatement of a large volume of ammonia purge gas whose concentration changes, especially in emergency situations such as power outages. This report describes our unique system to quick abatement method for a large volume and high-pressure ammonia purge gas from piping.
