The Japanese government's Green Growth Strategy for carbon neutrality by 2050 presents a "roadmap" for the growth of the fuel ammonia industry. One of the future initiatives is to promote ammonia fuel conversion in coal-fired power generation. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. is developing technology to enable fuel conversion to more than 50% ammonia for both circular firing and opposed firing systems of coal-fired boilers to respond to the initiatives of various customers in Japan and overseas. Stable combustion was confirmed in both the single-fuel firing test using an ammonia single-fuel burner and the combustion test of more than 50% ammonia with coal, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions were reduced compared to the coal single-fuel burner test, and ammonia was completely burned. This paper reports on this verification.
