Accidents resulting in the loss of young lives due to being left behind on school buses have been occurring repeatedly in Japan and abroad, so the installation of a child presence detection (CPD) system on school buses has become mandatory in Japan since fiscal year 2023. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machinery Systems, Ltd. has developed the CPD system Mikke, which prevents accidents by utilizing mechatronics and sensor-applied technologies, and began accepting orders in July 2023. Mikke employs a radar sensor that detects human movement, achieving higher detection accuracy for persons left behind compared to other systems. This report presents an overview of this radar sensor-based CPD system.
