MHI and MHIENG Awarded FEED Contract Relating to a GTCC Power Plant and CO2 Capture Plant for a Power Station in Scotland

Tokyo, August 30, 2022 – Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI), with support from its power solutions brand, Mitsubishi Power, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering, Ltd. (MHIENG), part of MHI Group, have jointly been awarded a Front End Engineering Design (FEED) contract relating to a gas turbine combined cycle (GTCC) power plant and CO2 capture plant planned for construction at the Peterhead Power Station in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
For the execution of the FEED, MHI and MHIENG partnered with two international engineering firms: Worley and Técnicas Reunidas. S.A. to deliver the engineering design of MHI’s most advanced, next-generation and high-efficiency M701JAC (J-series air-cooled) gas turbine, and MHIENG’s “Advanced KM CDR Process™” developed together with The Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc.

The project at Aberdeenshire is being developed jointly by SSE Thermal, part of SSE plc, one of the major power providers in the UK, and Norway-based Equinor Energy AS, one of the largest energy companies in Northern Europe. The plant is expected to capture up to 1.5 million tonnes per annual of CO2. The captured CO2 would be transported and sequestered underground in the North Sea. The project could be the first of its kind in Scotland and is looking to achieve commercial-scale CO2 capture and storage (CCS) from the GTCC plant’s flue-gas emissions.

The UK Government has set a target of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2050. To respond to that initiative, MHI Group has recently strengthened its operating structure in the UK with the establishment of a “Decarbonization Business Department” based at head office of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries EMEA (MHI-EMEA) in London, MHI’s regional headquarters for operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

MHI Group is currently strengthening its position in the Energy Transition, and the development of a CO2 solutions ecosystem is a core component of that initiative. CO2 capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) is garnering attention as an effective means for realizing a carbon-neutral society. MHI Group will apply their Group synergies toward achieving total optimization of the Peterhead Carbon Capture Power Station from the dual aspects of its power plants and carbon dioxide capture plant. They will also combine their respective resources to contribute toward the realization of this symbolically important decarbonization project in Scotland, responding to the client’s needs and contributing more broadly to a sustainable world.

About Mitsubishi Power’s J-Series Air-Cooled Gas Turbines
The J-series air-cooled (JAC) gas turbines are today’s most advanced 1,650°C-class gas turbines. Based on the J-series gas turbines – the world’s first gas turbines to achieve an inlet temperature of 1,600°C and offer 99.5% reliability – the JAC offerings have been enhanced through adoption of the world’s first enhanced air-cooled combustor, providing superlative performance and operability, a thicker thermal barrier coating (TBC), and a compressor with a high pressure ratio of 25:1. Gas turbines in the series achieve the world’s highest power generation efficiency rate, higher than 64%, and deliver outstanding operability from features including shorter startup time. Installation of the J-series air-cooled gas turbines at the core of a GTCC power plant contributes to stable energy provision essential to global economic growth, and also enables response to global demand for decarbonization.

About MHIENG CO2 capture technology
MHIENG (originally MHI) has been developing the KM CDR Process™ (Kansai Mitsubishi Carbon Dioxide Recovery Process) and the Advanced KM CDR Process™ in collaboration with Kansai Electric Power since 1990, and today MHIENG stands as a global leader in this field. As of August 2022, the company has delivered 14 plants adopting the KM CDR Process™, and two more are currently under construction. The Advanced KM CDR Process™, selected for the Peterhead Power Station project, uses KS-21™, which incorporates technological improvements over the KS-1™ solvent adopted at all 14 of the commercial CO2 capture plants MHIENG has delivered to date. The advanced version offers superior regeneration efficiency and lower deterioration than KS-1™, and it has been verified to provide excellent energy saving performance, reduce operation costs, and result in low amine emissions.
