Announcement Regarding the Construction Work of the Giant Cantilever Crane

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (hereinafter “MHI”) has decided to lower the Giant Cantilever Crane superstructure to the ground in order to carry out a detailed structural inspection (*) of the crane (one of the component parts of the “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining” registered as a World Heritage Site in 2015) installed at the Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works.
Since its construction in 1909, the crane has long been in operation with careful and intensive maintenance over the course of more than a century. However, due to recent deterioration, MHI, as a manufacturing company operating in Nagasaki Port, has made this decision to ensure labor safety at the workplace.

Going forward, MHI will cooperate with relevant organizations in conducting the detailed structural inspection and in conservation activities aimed at preserving the World Heritage values based on the inspection results.
The inspection results will be shared with relevant organizations both in Japan and overseas and will be utilized in considering future conservation methods.

The timeframe for completion of the conservation work has not yet been determined.
