MHI Thermal Systems Conducts Science Class on Temperature Alteration at Kojo Elementary School in Kiyosu, Aichi

On December19, employees of the MHI Group company Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Thermal Systems, Ltd. (MHI Thermal Systems) conducted a science class on various ways of changing temperature, both hot and cold, at Kojo Elementary School in Kiyosu City, Aichi Prefecture. The class was targeted at 49 six-graders.

The class, which was instructed by young employees, consisted of a program of experiments through which the students learned how the temperature of various materials can be artificially changed. For example, they observed how a bow drill can be used to generate frictional heat, and how compressing air causes its temperature to rise. In another experiment, they saw how temperature can be changed by dissolving an ordinary silica gel packet - of the kind commonly used as a desiccant - in water. In this instance, the students confirmed the change in temperature not only using a thermometer but also referring to a thermoviewer, a device whereby colors are shown on a screen to indicate the temperature of a material. In the final experiment, the children made ice cream by applying the principle that when salt is put into ice, the temperature becomes even lower.

The students listened attentively to the instructors' explanations and watched or took part in the experiments with great interest. Our hope is that classes such as this will spur young people's interest in science.

Going forward, the MHI Group will continue to communicate closely with its local communities, undertaking an array of activities to support the development of the next generation.
