On August 30, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machine Tool Co., Ltd. (MAT) (President: Keiichiro Iwasaki, Head office: Ritto City, Shiga Prefecture) conducted a science class for ten elementary school students on the theme of "Rainbow Colors from Common Mallow Flowers" at the Hidamari-no-Ie Community Center in Ritto City.

By request of Ritto City, MAT has been conducting learning support and science experiment classes that complement studies for students from elementary to high school level since 2015. The aim of these activities is to improve the academic ability of local children.

On the day, MAT employees took on the role of lecturers, and conducted experiments to show that if you put familiar solutions such as vinegar, lemon, carbonated water or salt water into common mallow herbal tea, they change color, and depending on the color, one can know whether the solution is acidic, neutral or alkaline. Common mallow contains a dye called anthocyanin, which changes color depending on the properties of the solution, turning red for acid and blue to green for alkaline. For this reason, the children also extracted liquid from anthocyanin-rich grape skins and confirmed what color it changed to depending on the solution.
We hope that the children participating in the class will become more interested in science as a result of these experiments.

The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group will continue to promote activities that support the next generation while keeping close communication with local communities.
