Every year since 2011 Thomson Reuters has issued a list of what it assesses to be the world's 100 most innovative companies or research institutes based on independent analysis of patent ownership data. The companies and research institutes selected by Thomson Reuters are recognized as "top global innovators" for their creation of highly valued inventions destined to have significant impact on the global market, for their proper protection of their innovations via intellectual property rights, and for worldwide promotion of their innovations through commercialization.

MHI was included in the Top 100 of 2014 based on its outstanding track records in intellectual property initiatives and strategies and R&D. The company was highly rated in each of Thomson Reuters' four criteria categories: volume (number of innovations), success patent grant rate), global (portfolio of patents registered in multiple world markets) and influence (citations of inventions).

"Globalization of intellectual property activities and strategies" and "utilization of intellectual property" are two of MHI's fundamental management policies. The company consistently strives to secure overseas intellectual property, and build a portfolio of optimal intellectual property that meets the purposes of intellectual property utilization, such as blocking other entrant and market expansion that incorporates an open strategy. The company’s solid record in these comprehensive initiatives is believed to have led to its selection by Thomson Reuters as a Top Global Innovator for the third year in a row.

Going forward, MHI is firmly committed to continuing its active pursuit of innovative R&D as well as protecting and utilizing the intellectual property born from its R&D in the global markets.
