Tokyo, October 18, 2013 - Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) today signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Touch'n Go Sdn. Bhd. and Quatriz System Sdn. Bhd. of Malaysia, to further promote intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in that country. Under the terms of the memorandum, the three companies will collaborate in developing the ITS market in Malaysia, a country with one of the most extensive toll-road networks in Southeast Asia. The collaboration will strengthen MHI's presence in the Malaysian ITS market and provide Touch'n Go and Quatriz System with MHI's advanced technologies in the ITS field. Going forward, the three companies will study a broad range of subjects, including enhancement of existing electronic toll collection (ETC) system by new technology such as a multi-lane free-flow (MLFF) system that allows the free flow of multi-lane traffic without requiring vehicles to slow down for toll collection.
Based on the MOU, the three companies will establish a joint team to study ITS applications and explore their commercial feasibility, including MLFF systems, area road pricing (ARP) and parking fee systems for Kuala Lumpur, and advanced GPS-based ITS services.
Touch'n Go is a clearing house operation company established in 1996. The company operates the prepaid smartcard system for various applications including ETC systems on toll roads across the Malay Peninsula. Quatriz Sytem, which belongs to same business group as Touch'n Go, is a system integrator of electronic settlement systems for a variety of industries, including ETC systems for toll roads.
Malaysia currently has some 1,920 kilometers of toll road with 1,700 toll collection lanes in total, and an installed user base of approximately two million on-board ETC units. The government of Malaysia has also begun specific study of MLFF systems for ETC.
After delivering Malaysia's first toll collection machine for toll roads in 1985, MHI conducted trial operation of an MLFF type ETC system on the highway near Kuala Lumpur in 2009. In addition to MHI's close relationship with Malaysia in the ETC field, MHI has provided neighboring Singapore with ERP (electric road pricing) system on-board units for two million vehicles - almost all of the cars in the country. In signing the memorandum of understanding, Touch'n Go and Quatriz System have recognized MHI's track record and advanced ITS technology expertise.
With the establishment of MHI's Kuala Lumpur office this past June and the momentum gained from today's MOU signing, MHI will continue to strengthen its support for ITS development and the realization of a safer and more comfortable transportation environment in Malaysia.
