Provision 1 of the MHI Group's principles reads: "We deliver reliable and innovative solutions that make a lasting difference to customers and communities worldwide." This means that our primary purpose is to contribute to society through R&D, manufacturing and other business activities. The company shall undertake all aspects of its business activities with the understanding that it is an integral member of society and will strive to reduce its burden on the environment, contributing to the development of a sustainable society.
Plant: CO₂ Recovery Technology
We started developing technology to capture CO₂ from combustion exhaust gas in collaboration with Kansai Electric Power Co., Ltd. in 1990. Since delivering our first commercial system to Malaysia in 1999, we have built 13 commercial CO₂ capture plants in countries around the globe, and our commercial sales in this field are the world’s largest. The CO₂ capture plant that we delivered to Petra Nova in the US, which has been in operation since the end of December 2016, has the largest CO₂ recovery capacity in the world (4,776 tons/day), and is used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR).
We will continue to contribute to the development of a sustainable society by reducing environmental burden through our original CO₂ recovery technology, which is both highly reliable and economical.
Transportation System: Eco-friendly AGT (Automated Guideway Transit) manufacturing
Regarding the manufacturing of sustainable vehicles, our design is conducted in accordance with The Basic Act on Establishing a Sound Material-Cycle Society.
For energy-saving lighting, LEDs are used for ceiling-light, headlights, and tail-lights, reducing the number of fluorescent and incandescent lights. As a highly recyclable material, aluminum is used for most of the vehicle parts including not only the car bodies , but also the interior panels, seat frames, driver’s seat, and machine frame, while stainless steel is normally used as the body material of the vehicle. This aluminum material is easier to be recycled than stainless steel.
We also proactively seek to identify and use recyclable materials besides aluminum, such as seat cushions that can be processed into kerosene. In addition to recycling, the use of uncoated bodies and oil-free air compressors helps reduce the use of paints and lubricants.
We have also successfully reduced the weight of the vehicle (20% lighter than our conventional vehicle). This reduces power consumption and consumable products such as tires and guide wheels.
