First MHI Group Companies PR Meeting Held

CROSS BORDER
Information Is for Sharing and Connecting
In this month’s issue, we share information on the PR Meeting held at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO) headquarters. We have many colleagues throughout MHI Group. This means there is always someone with the same concerns as you. By sharing our concerns with Group members, we can search for new solutions!

First in Charge of external PR
Kohei Tanabe was put in charge of MCO’s external PR in 2024. Until then, he was involved in sales, procurement, and operations closer to business divisions. Inexperienced in external PR, Kohei had to start from the basics. However, it was no easy task to find example cases compatible with the environment in which MCO operates.
Under such circumstances, he remembered there were other external PR positions within MHI Group and had an idea for a meeting where PR employees in similar environments could share their concerns, challenges, and best practices. Kohei believed incorporating each other’s excellent approaches would make it possible to develop highly practical PR activities.
Proposed PR Meetings as a leader
As such an event had at least never been held in Energy Systems, Kohei decided to jump in as the first penguin. After directly consulting with and getting approval from PR employees at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Marine Machinery & Equipment Co., Ltd., and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Aero Engines, Ltd., he discussed the needs of Group companies with MHI’s Corporate Communication Department and Energy Systems’ Communications & Government Relationships Group and asked them to join as observers. Furthermore, word of the PR Meeting spread, leading to Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machinery Systems, Ltd., Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engine & Turbocharger, Ltd., Primetals Technologies Japan, and GX Solutions’ Planning Group joining the cause. Kohei reflected with a smile, saying “I was grateful that people listened with such open minds. Working together to create preliminary materials reminded us all of the strength of our Group’s coordination.”
Expanding perspectives through other companies’ examples
At the resulting MHI Group Companies PR Meeting, we exchanged opinions on how to improve employee engagement and secure excellent human resources based on real case studies. After the meeting, we toured MCO’s new office building and assembly shop as well as strengthened relationships at an after-party and through other activities.

I was not alone in my worries
The PR Meeting was the first cross-company meeting for PR personnel at Energy Systems’ Group companies, highlighting strong demand for inter-company collaboration. The meeting was well received by participants, so we decided to have another. By gathering people from more companies, we will accumulate more examples of both successes and failures, along with valuable know-how, thereby improving both the quality and quantity of shared insights. We plan to continue collaborating closely among Group companies and to brush up our PR operations.

Through this event, I learned each company’s PR activities are based on their business’ characteristics and market environment. We cater to different customers via separate PR strategies, but it became clear that we also share many similar challenges. In response to these challenges, I believe we can improve MHI Group’s PR capabilities by sharing our strengths and success stories. This was the first PR Meeting, but I hope it will not be the last; it is continuous, organizational activities that will grow our Group’s brand strength, not temporary or one-time initiatives. PR activities like this will help to fulfill our duty to communicate MHI Group’s appeal and social significance to more people.

At this meeting, I gained insight into the kinds of initiatives being implemented by colleagues throughout the Group. Hearing about the challenges and concerns of other companies made me realize how many we had in common. From this experience, I gained a lot of ideas for how to address Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machinery Systems’ challenges going forward.
I also consider it a great success that I was able to connect with colleagues with similar goals. I will continue to treasure these connections and collaborate with them to disseminate valuable information for enhancing our external and internal branding!

Many of the people at the meeting were inexperienced in PR, but we all shared a desire to make our companies better. I felt this desire was the driving force that would lead to various activities. It was also a valuable opportunity to learn everyone is finding their own way by trying new things.

My biggest takeaway from the meeting was the concept of mutual responsibility for information. Information isn’t something that one person shares with others, but something everyone is responsible for sharing and connecting. Looking across our Group, many of my colleagues handle PR in similar ways, bringing me encouragement. Even in a vertical organization, taking a horizontal perspective on PR will cultivate cross-department and cross-company connections. I hope we can continue sharing information to improve our PR capabilities!

The meeting helped me understand PR activities across our Group. The information on how to use internal newsletters and managing exhibitions was also enlightening. I got a strong sense of a need for social media in recruitment PR and gathered concrete ideas for future recruitment strategies, making this meeting a valuable opportunity. Particularly impressive was the sense of comradery that developed from realizing we share similar concerns. Learning that other business divisions and companies have similar concerns reaffirmed the importance of sharing information. Motivated by this meeting, I want to expand my network for sharing information and further strengthen Group collaboration.

Listening to examples of activities and the challenges of other companies provided a good opportunity to rethink how we do PR. Additionally, as someone with no PR experience, I gained the incredibly valuable insight that PR should not be limited to media, but should also include a wide range of activities that involve other departments, such as recruitment PR. I now believe that PR is a management function that can contribute to achieving our organization’s goals by building relationships through internal and external communication.
