MCO will supply the Integrally Geared Compressor for first full-scale CCS project in UK’s cement sector
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO) has been awarded the compressor package for the Heidelberg Materials Padeswood CCS project — the first carbon capture and storage plant at a cement production facility in the UK. MCO supports Padeswood CCS as a core equipment supplier, together with the integrated project team led by Worley and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI).
MCO will provide an integrally geared compressor to MHI to support the deployment of the innovative KM CDR ™ carbon capture process. It will compress around 2,700 tonnes per day of captured CO₂ for transmission into a pipeline to be permanently sequestered. The compressor delivers high performance by employing a high-efficiency impeller and features a compact casing design with excellent maintainability. MCO has a good track record for large scale CCUS projects, including the Petra Nova Carbon Capture plant in the U.S., and this collaboration represents the corporate synergies within the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group that enable execution of major CCUS projects.
MCO has installed a dedicated test facility for geared compressors at its headquarters plant (Hiroshima). Using a dual-shaft test motor with compressors mounted on both sides, the facility maximizes the number of units that can be tested and enables us to meet shorter lead-time requirements for CCUS compressor packages, where demand is expected to grow.
