Hybrid SOx Scrubber System
Since sulfur is a component of the heavy oil used as fuel for ships, sulfur oxides (SOx) are emitted in the exhaust gas. As a major contributor to air pollution and acid rain, SOx emissions are regulated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). For ship operators, however, switching to low-sulfur fuel is a huge burden owing to the high price of the fuel. In this context, the MHI Group supplies exhaust gas cleaning systems, which have been approved by the IMO, as an alternative measure to switching to low-sulfur fuel. This system makes it possible to comply with SOx emission regulations while continuing to use conventional heavy oil as fuel.
