About Accident of Containership MOL Comfort at Sea

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has announced that on June 18 a containership under its operation, the MOL Comfort, suffered a crack amidships and ingressing water in its hold while under way during inclement weather in the Indian Ocean, making it impossible for the vessel to continue on under its own power. The ship is reported to have subsequently broken into two at the center and its two sections began to float.

The MOL Comfort was built at MHI's Nagasaki Shipyard & Machinery Works. It entered into service in July 2008.

According to an MOL press release, the crew members all evacuated by lifeboat and were safely rescued. MHI is now cooperating fully with MOL to determine the cause of the incident.
