MHI's Response to the Great East Japan Earthquake (Second report)

MHI Group relief support activities as of June 10 are as follows.

    Customer support measures

    Support to electric power companies

    • Transport of personnel and materials by company helicopters immediately after the disaster.
    • Dispatched equivalent to approximately 10,000 man-days (as of May 31) to thermal power plants operated by TEPCO and Tohoku Electric, now supporting efforts to recover power generation capacity.
    • Production now being strengthened toward early delivery of power generating equipment, such as gas turbines, industrial power generating equipment, at the company's production bases. (Takasago Machinery Works, Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works, Sagamihara Machinery Works)
    • Free loan of 5 electric vehicles for business use at electric power companies

    Support to Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant

    • Performed conversion work at Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works on "Mega-Float" provided to TEPCO by Shizuoka City to store large volume of water pooling at the reactors.
    • Provided 2 vehicles based on 15 ton forklifts to handle rubble near the nuclear power plan.
    • In response to requests from TEPCO, technological feasibility studies are in progress for treating contaminated water, shielding against radiation, prevention of spread of radioactive materials, etc.

    Other support activities

    • Support being provided toward early restart of waste treatment facilities in the disaster-affected municipalities; also responding to inquiries from affected municipalities, etc. regarding simple incinerators (widely used after Great Hanshin Earthquake)
    • Response under way toward restoring social infrastructure, such as bridges, electronic toll collection system, beverage fillers, newspaper rotary press, paper converting machinery in the disaster-affected area.
    • Supporting affected customers to restore machine tools (600 personnel) and air-conditioning (400 personnel); product support system has been established

    Relief support to disaster area

    Relief assistance and fund-raising campaigns

    • MHI Group to provide relief assistance equivalent to approx. 500 million yen.
      ・ Total includes monetary aid and emergency supplies. (for daily needs, etc.)
    • Relief fund-raising campaigns under way at the Head Office and all company works. Approx. 45 million yen has been collected and company plans to provide a matching amount, which makes total value equivalent to 100 million yen.

    Support of medical activities

    • Medical supplies transported to Fukushima region using company aircraft
      ・ Approx. 500kg (arranged through Nagoya Medical Association)
      ・ Two flights on March 19 (Nagoya Airfield to Fukushima Airport)
    • Dispatch of doctors and nurses from company medical facilities (Mitsubishi Hospitals), at request of Japan Medical Association et al.

    : 1 nurse assigned to Kesennuma City (Miyagi Pref.) Mar 31 to Apr 5
    Kobe
    : Dispatched one medical doctor to Fukushima Prefecture from March 24 to May 11.
    Additional doctors will be sent at request.
    Dispatched one nurse to Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture from May 6 to 10.
    Dispatched one nurse to Ishinomaki City from May 22 to 26.

    Doctors will be sent at request.
    Transported medical supplies using company aircraft
    • Cooperation in receiving patients at company medical facilities (Mitsubishi Hospitals)
      Notification of acceptance at 5 company hospitals (Nagasaki, Kobe, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Mihara) sent to Japan Medical Association.

    Provision of company facilities for disaster victims

    • Registration at municipalities of company facilities available to accepting victims.
      Company housing: 179 households (11 locations)
      Dormitories: 328 persons (5 locations)
      Recreational facilities: 285 persons (2 locations)
    • Offered nine company housing units at Sagamihara Machinery Works to companies in affected areas.

    • Menu featuring foods and alcoholic beverages (night shift) from the disaster areas, now victim to fear mongering.
      ・ Provided approximately 1000 meals in total at the Shinagawa Head Office Building and the Yokohama Building, employee dorm dining halls, etc. Progressive expansion to company works, etc. nationwide. Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works began offering in dinner menu.
    • 10 percent of alcoholic beverage sales to be allocated to relief fund.
    • Display and sale of local specialty products of the disaster areas.

    Dispatch of employee volunteers

    • Approx. 110 employees dispatched as volunteers from Tokyo area (Head Office, Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works, Sagamihara Machinery Works)
    • Duration: dispatched three times between May24 and June 10. (four days each time with 24-40 people.)
    • Place: Evacuation centers in the cities of Kesennnuma, Minami-Sanrikucho and Tome in Miyagi Prefecture.
    • Activities: Cooking, cleaning of evacuation centers, delivering and categorizing of relief supplies.

    • April 24.Dynaboars, the rugby club at Sagamihara Machinery Works, provided a rugby clinic in Sendai City to about 130 elementary, junior high and high school students.

    Energy Conservation Measures for Summer Peak Season

    Toward reducing peak power consumption by 25 percent vs. 2010, the following energy conservation measures are planned in addition to those already in progress. (Shinagawa and Yokohama Head Office buildings, Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works, Sagamihara Machinery Works)

    • Expanded operation of stand-alone power generators at Shinagawa Head Office, Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works and Sagamihara Machinery Works
    • Introduced extended holiday plan at the Shinagawa Head Office Building and the Yokohama Building for ten days from July 16-25 and twelve days from August 11-22. (some holidays in the autumn and after will be converted to work days.)
    • Partial changes will be made to the summer holiday schedule (July – September) at the Yokohama Dockyard & Machinery Works and Sagamihara Machinery Works. (From July through September, some Mondays will be taken as makeup holidays and some Saturdays will be workdays.)
