Employee Volunteers Participate in Tree Planting Festival in Iwaki,
Fukushima, with Saplings They Raised at Home

Since 2014 the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) Group has cooperated in raising saplings for the disaster prevention green space currently under construction along the coast in Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture, by the Fukushima Prefecture Iwaki Building Office. MHI is taking part as one of its activities to support recovery in the region affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami disaster of 2011.

On October 22, MHI employee volunteers participated in a tree planting festival in the disaster prevention green space being created in the Iwamamachi district of Iwaki, an event sponsored by the NPO Nakoso Town Planning Support Center. The participating employees have been growing saplings for this project at their homes for more than three years.

On the appointed day, approximately 200 volunteers were on hand—also including residents from the local region, university students studying in Tokyo, et al.—in spite of inclement weather caused by an approaching typhoon. Together they planted a total of 1,350 saplings, in the hope of bringing back the abundant natural environment that existed in this area until its devastation in the tsunami.

The volunteer employees, on witnessing how recovery is underway in the disaster zone, deepened their understanding of the importance of disaster prevention green spaces. Imagining how the area will look when the saplings they nurtured grow tall, they all shared the desire to return someday to see that magnificent sight with their own eyes.

In line with the commitments of its CSR Action Guidelines to “care for the planet” and “create a more harmonious society,” the MHI Group will continue to strive to make social contributions through a variety of locally based activities.
