Science Class Held at Konan Elementary School "Let's make and fly airplanes ˜ the MRJ ˜"

The class was conducted with the cooperation of three members of DIRECTFORCE, a general incorporated association. Among the three was Norio Yamanouchi, a former employee of MHI who designed and test-piloted the YS-11, Japan's first passenger plane produced in the postwar era. Mr. Yamanouchi and his colleagues assisted the students in fabricating a model of the MRJ from pattern paper. Then, by experimenting with flying the model, the students learned the scientific principles that enable an airplane to fly. A contest was also held to see who could make improvements to the model to make it fly the farthest distance.

The class was observed by two representatives from ANBEC (Associação Nippo Brasileira Economia e Cultura),who will conduct a similar science class for middle school students at a school for Brazilian children in September.

Students who attended the classes offered a variety of comments. "Through the experiment using the hairdryer I was able to understand the principle by which an airplane rises very well." "It was great getting to know so many of the things that MHI makes." "I came away wanting to know more and more about the MRJ."

Going forward, we will continue to convey the fun of science to children through "monozukuri" (craftsmanship/manufacturing) as part of our contributions to our local communities and the development and support of future generations.
